The moment you leave the quay and the first course is served shortly after, you immediately notice that this is no ordinary cruise. As the historic saloon boat glides smoothly through the water, the canal belt unfolds like a world-class floating restaurant. Here, you do not enjoy standard catering, but culinary masterpieces that come to you directly from Amsterdam’s most prestigious kitchens at the moment of serving. At Classic Boat Dinners, we have elevated this to an art form. We are the only shipping company in Amsterdam with the keys to the most exclusive kitchens, allowing you to enjoy a restaurant experience on board at an unprecedented level.
What sets us apart from other companies is that we do not work with ‘dark kitchens’ or catering firms that cook elsewhere and deliver food in warming containers. With us, the canal belt is your restaurant. We literally sail from course to course along the city’s best hotels. As soon as we moor, the dish is personally brought on board by the chef, exactly at the moment it leaves the kitchen. On board, our skippers take over. Because each of them has a background in high-end hospitality, the service at the table is of the same level as in the starred restaurants where we dock. The tables are set with crisp white linen, gleaming silver, and crystal glasses, completing the intimate ambiance of the saloon boat. Serving is done with utmost precision and an eye for detail; we know exactly when to discreetly refill your glass and when to give you space for a good conversation. As a result, you not only eat food that is fresh and at the perfect temperature, but you also enjoy a level of personal attention that is unique on the water.
Our culinary journey often begins at the iconic Dylan Hotel on the Keizersgracht. In the kitchen of the prestigious Michelin-starred restaurant Vinkeles, refined dishes are prepared with extreme precision. Normally, it is virtually impossible for groups of up to twelve people to dine à la carte here; you are often tied to a set menu. However, thanks to our years of collaboration, we have a unique arrangement: our guests can simply choose what they feel like on board. Whether you are with two or twelve people, the quality and freedom of choice of Vinkeles come directly to you on the water.
The Amstel Hotel For the main course, we often sail towards the Amstel Hotel, perhaps the most iconic building on the Amstel river. Where the hotel previously worked with multiple shipping companies, they have now drastically limited their partnerships. Classic Boat Dinners is one of the few parties still permitted to moor here for culinary assignments. That says everything about the quality level we guarantee. A main course from the Amstel Hotel on board our saloon boats is an experience in itself: classic gastronomy, prepared by top chefs and served in the intimate setting of your own boat.
When we talk about flexibility and true Amsterdam passion, we talk about Restaurant Johannes. Johannes is our rock when it comes to à la carte dining. While many restaurants are hesitant regarding specific requests outside the menu, Johannes goes the extra mile. Do you feel like a perfectly cooked Dover sole or an impressive côte de bœuf that happens not to be on the menu? We call Johannes, and they arrange it. Sourcing two days in advance and preparing it with love on the evening itself: that is the service we love to offer our guests.
A dinner is, of course, not complete without a spectacular conclusion. For our desserts, we often moor at The Grand (Sofitel Legend). This hotel is renowned for its refined patisserie and artistic desserts. In our menu structure — where we have named the menus after the canal belt, such as the Herenmenu, Keizersmenu, and Prinsenmenu — The Grand often forms the ‘grande finale’. It is the perfect place to conclude your culinary journey of discovery while enjoying a world-class dessert and a matching glass of dessert wine.
The most remarkable thing about dining with Classic Boat Dinners is that you have the freedom to choose à la carte for up to twelve people. In a regular restaurant, groups larger than eight are often asked to choose a menu in advance to relieve the kitchen. With us, it works differently. Per course, you can choose from different dishes (with a limit of four different choices per course for the entire group). This means that you and your guests are not bound by the majority’s choice but can truly eat what you feel like at that moment. It is gastronomic freedom in its most luxurious form, right in the middle of the Amsterdam canals.
